Allerheiligentor Fest, June 2018
Earlier this month, Hafenkirche, our church plant in Frankfurt, held a free festival for their neighbourhood. Esther Crook sent us this report.
Wir hatten viel gebetet und geplant in Vorbereitung für unser allererstes Gemeindefest, aber keiner von uns ahnte so richtig was uns eigentlich erwartete. Wir wussten natürlich, dass ein Fest grundsätzlich in Deutschland immer gut ankommt, aber fragten uns wie auf den sehr offensichtlich christlichen Teilen des Festes z.B. „Gebetsschirm“ und „Was wolltest du Gott schon immer Fragen“ Canvas, reagiert werden würde.
Am Samstag Morgen um 07:30 (!) versammelten wir uns also im Park, um mit dem Aufbau zu beginnen und zu beten. Wir hatten auch ein wunderbares Team freiwilliger Helfern von RM Gemeinden aus Süddeutschland, England und Holland dabei, die ein riesen Segen für uns waren! Es ging zwar langsam los, aber Stück für Stück kamen dann die ersten neugierigen Spaziergänger. Kostenloser Kaffee und Kuchen waren ein großer Anziehungspunkt! Innerhalb von ein Paar Stunden war das Fest in vollem Schwung. Menschen aus allen Altersgruppen und von vielen verschiedenen Kulturen beteiligten sich an den Spielen und Aktivitäten und genossen unsere leckeren selbstgebackenen Kuchen. Viele stellten die Frage „wieso ist das alles kostenlos?!“. Eine gute Gelegenheit für uns damit zu antworten, dass wir eine lokale christliche Gemeinde sind, die einfach unsere Stadt segnen möchte, sowie es uns Jesus befahl. Außerdem hatte Gott unsere Gebete für schönes Wetter erhört und während das gesamten Tages hatten wir rundum 300 Besucher!
Was mir besonders aufgefallen ist (vielleicht bin ich zu zynisch!), ist das keine Person, mit der wir sprachen wirklich misstrauisch reagierte als wir erwähnten dass wir eine christliche Gemeinde sind. Stattdessen war die Reaktion eher Neugier und sie fragten was wir für eine Kirche sind und was genau wir eigentlich glauben. Das ALLERBESTE war aber, am nächsten Morgen 9 Leute vom Fest in unserem Gottesdienst begrüßen zu dürfen! Das Evangelium wurde verkündigt und sie hörten es! Danach beendeten wir das Fest mit einem Internationalem Picknick im Park, wozu auch noch einige weitere Familien vorbeikamen und Essen von ihren verschiedenen Ländern mitbrachten.
Es ist erstaunlich zu sehen wie Gott eine solche Veranstaltung nutzen kann, insbesondere für uns als sehr neue Gemeinde. Es war eine wirklich großartige Gelegenheit die Tore der Gemeinschaft zu öffnen und die Liebe Gottes zu zeigen. Wir hoffen, dass ist nur der Anfang! „Denn ich bin mit dir, und niemand soll dich angreifen, dir Böses zu tun; denn ich habe ein großes Volk in dieser Stadt.“ (Apg 18,10; ELB)

Much prayer and preparation had gone into our first ever Fest (German for "festival/fayre") but I don't think any of us really knew quite what to expect. We knew that Germans love a Fest, but how would the public react to us as a church, being so overtly Christian? (With prayer tent, "Questions to God” canvas etc).
So, on Saturday morning we all rocked up at the park at 07:30 (!) to set-up and pray. We were joined by an AMAZING team of RM volunteers from the UK, Southern Germany and the Netherlands, who were an enormous blessing throughout! Things started off slowly, but bit by bit, curious passers-by came to have a look, tempted in by the offer of free coffee and cake! Within a couple of hours, the Fest was in full swing, with people of all ages and from vast array of different cultures, participating in the various games and activities and enjoying our delicious home-baked cakes. The question on most people's lips was "it's free?! How come?!". What a perfect opportunity for us to explain we are a local church who just wanted to bless our local community and love our neighbours as Jesus has commanded! Furthermore, God blessed us with beautiful weather and over the course of the day we welcomed close to 300 visitors.
What particularly struck me (maybe I'm too cynical!) was the lack of suspicion people reacted with when we mentioned we were a church. In fact, many people asked questions about what kind of church we are and what exactly we believe. The MOST amazing thing, however, was seeing 9 people from the Fest at church the next morning, for some of whom it was the first time ever, to hear the Gospel preached! We ended the Fest with an international picnic in the park after church, and were joined by several other families who bought food along representing their nation.
It's amazing to see how God can use an event like this, particularly in our early days as a church plant. It was a great way for us to show the doors wide open to the community and share the love of Christ. Hopefully this is just the beginning! Acts 18:10 "for I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city."
