ID placements: We need you...in Canterbury and Whitstable

The City Church has been based in the south-eastern corner of the UK for 30 years now, and we have always been passionate about inviting people to encounter Jesus. With sites in both the historic city of Canterbury and also the coastal town of Whitstable, we are a 400-strong family of all ages – and would love for you to join us!

We have had ID interns for three years now – and have run previous gap-year programmes for many more – so we have a real heart to have people voluntarily join us on staff for a year to see them grow as disciples and leaders, as well as throw them into the heart and soul of church life. There is a great breadth of ministries we offer, so we focus the majority of our interns on a ministry they have a passion for. These include…

  • City Students – With two large university campuses in Canterbury, many of our interns have served alongside our Students ministry. From welcoming students on Sundays and providing student lunches, to meeting up with students in the week for coffee and discipleship, as well as putting on student socials and student services, leading student small groups, joining student mission trips…there is plenty to be involved with!

  • City Youth – with their own small groups at both sites, Sunday gatherings, socials, weekday meet-ups, as well as the legendary Weekend Away and annual NewDay conference, it’s an exciting place to be!

  • City Kids – with so many families in both Canterbury and Whitstable, our primary-school-aged work is growing fast. Join the team in a whole host of areas – Sundays, special events during the holidays, team gatherings, schools work, and much more!

  • City Worship – 2017/18 has been our first year offering this, and it has been such a blessing to all. Our large team across both sites have a real heart to encourage, equip and resource the church to worship, so come join us!

On top of this, we also ensure you have opportunities to serve in areas outside of ministry to experience the extent of church life.

All the ministries above have either part-time or full-time staff overseeing them, so whichever you join, you will be well supported and cared for. Our supervisor is always a full-time member of staff, so you will have close 1-1 support week in, week out. We normally offer a contribution towards your ID fees and help you find accommodation in Canterbury. For more information, head to thecitychurch.org.uk

MORE ABOUT ID:

Why be an ID intern?

ID is a year-long church internship program designed to help you walk with Jesus into the adventures that he has for you. Over the course of the year you'll be immersed in the life and mission of a local church, where you can serve in a wide variety of exciting ministries and be lovingly discipled. We also expose you to exciting missional opportunities with Relational Mission churches in the UK and Europe.

We want to intentionally disciple you. To help you grow in knowledge and passion for God, to learn you are you, and how you can live and speak for Jesus in every area of life.

Why host or send an ID intern?

Our hope is that ID not only blesses the individual interns but also the churches that host and send them. Having an ‘IDer’ in your church who is well invested in and given opportunities to serve and step out demonstrates a commitment to investing in individuals.

Likewise, sending folks on ID shows that as a church you are committed to Christ’s commission and value the apostolic as much as the local.

So, who could you send onto the course? Could your church offer someone a placement?

Who is it for?

Anyone aged 18+ who is able to take a year out and who wants to grow in their faith.

ID can be a wonderful opportunity for college/school leavers to get a solid foundation of theology and character before heading to the work place or off to university. Likewise for those finishing university considering what to do next. We have also had a good number of men and women in their twenties and thirties take career breaks in order to do the course. We haven't yet had anyone in retirement come onto the course, but we’re open to that!

I'm in! How do I apply?

The application process can be found on the ID webpage. Applicants complete an online form which comes through to the ID team who then contact the sending church to discuss the applicant and the placement options available.

Or you can contact Matt Fell directly to ask any questions and to find out more.
